  General Notes:

In his daughter Catherine's birth certificate in 1863, Martin, the informant, described himself as an iron miner.

In 1864 he did so again in his son John's birth certificate.

In 1866 he was recorded as an iron miner in his son Martin's birth certificate.

He was an iron miner in 1868 at Ellen's birth, but the family had moved to a new address.

Martin Quigley, a widower, was head of the household living at 22 New Smithhills Street according to the 1881 census for Abbey parish Paisley. Also recorded in the household were his three sons, his daughter and a niece, Mary Birnie aged 16 years and unemployed, who had been born in Ireland. Martin's age was 55 years and he had been born in Ireland. He was a pit labourer by occupation.

The 1891 census recorded a Martin Quiglay aged 62 years living in Paisley.

Martin died in 1908. His death certificate recorded him as aged 79 years, 'roadman married to 1 Ann Woods 2 Agnes Wallace'. His death certificate recorded his father as deceased but not his mother. 3 4 5

Martin Quigley, son of the deceased of 4 Johnston Street, gave notice before the registrar, Hugh Allison, at Paisley on 14 December 1908 of his father's death. 4


Martin married Ann WOODS on 17 August 1863 in St Mirin's RC Chapel, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.1 (Ann WOODS was born about 1828 and died in or before 1890.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest who married them was Fr Thomas Donnelly, the Roman Catholic Curate, and the witnesses were William Shannagan and Catherine Woods. Both the witnesses and the couple being married made only their X mark in the register.

The groom, Martin, was 35 years old and an iron miner. He had not been married before. His usual residence was 7 Old Smithhills, Paisley. This address was given for the bride's residence too.

The bride, Ann, was also 35 years of age and had not been married. Both her parents were dead when she married.

Martin next married Agnes WALLACE in 1890 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.2 (Agnes WALLACE was born 1845 ?.)
