  General Notes:

In the 1841 census for Dunkeld parish in Perthshire James Hardie was living in the High Street with his family, the second eldest of four children aged 6 years down to 5 months. His age was noted as 4 years old and her birthplace was Perthshire.


The census of 1851 recorded James Hardy aged 15 years, working as a farm servant at a farm in Moulin, near Pitlochry, Perthshire, about nine miles from Dowally, where he was recorded as having been born. He worked on a farm of 18 acres at Wester Lawey, farmed by John McDonald, whose wife and three daughters were also recorded.


The 1861 census for the civil parish of Dowally in Perthshire recorded James Hardie living at Balledmund with his grandparents Hardie. James was recorded as born in Dowally, Perthshire, and aged 24 years. James worked as a wood carter.

Note: when James Fraser Hardie married in 1867 his address was noted as Balledmond and he was gamekeeper there.


James Hardie, Barbara's husband, who had been present at Riemore in Caputh parish where the death occurred gave notice of her death in August 1885. He was recorded in the death certificate as a gamekeeper.


James married Barbara DOUGLAS, daughter of James DOUGLAS and Grace GOW, on 25 November 1864 in Craiglea, Logierait, Perthshire, Scotland. (Barbara DOUGLAS was born about 1845 in Blair Atholl Parish, Perthshire, Scotland and died 8 August 1885 at 3.00 pm in Riemore, Caputh, Perthshire, Scotland 1.). The cause of her death was pneumonia and peritonitis over 21 days.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. Samuel Cameron, minister of Logierait, officiated. Thomas Fraser and Alex. McDougall were witnesses.

The bridegroom was an unmarried man who worked as a gamekeeper. He was 27 years old and resided at Balledmond Lodge, Dowally, Perthshire. His mother was deceased.

The bride was a domestic servant and single. She lived at Tornabrack, Logierait. Her parents were both dead.

The marriage was registered on 28 November 1864.
