Edward was recorded in the 1861 census in an entry for 5 Burnhall Row, Cambusnethan parish, Lanarkshire. He was aged 14 years, was a coal miner, and had been born in Cambusnethan parish. His brother John, aged 10 years, was born there too.

In the death certificate of his wife Catherine in 1875, Edward's occupation was recorded as a 'chainman in a coal pit'. It was Edward, who, having been present where the death occurred, reported her death to the registrar, and made his X mark thereto.

In 1881 Edward Twigley was recorded by the census living in Cambusnethan with his wife, his mother and his two children. His age was recorded as 32 years and he was a coal miner. His wife's name was recorded as Catherine. This was not Catherine Barr, who had died in 1875, but his second wife Catherine Hay. Edward's place of birth was noted as Cambusnethan.

The 1891 census for Cambusnethan recorded Edward with his young wife and six children, four sons and two daughters, living at 4 Burnhall Row, Overtown, near Edward's brother John and his family. Edward was a coal miner and his age was noted as 40 years. ^{3 5 6}

From the information we have, it becomes clear that Edward's age is not easy to pinpoint accurately. For example his marriage certificate in March 1881 recorded him as aged 29 years giving a birth year of1851-1852 depending on his month of birth. The 1881 census, also in the Spring of that year, recorded his age as 32 years, giving him a birth year of 1848-1849. The earliest record, the census of 1861, recorded him as 14 years, giving him a birth year of 1846-1847. His second wife was very young. Perhaps he erred down the scale so as not to appear too much older than she was.

Edward married Catherine BARR on 2 July 1869 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland.¹ (Catherine BARR was born on 9 July 1837 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland and died 7 June 1875 at 11.30 am in 3 Burnhall Row, Waterloo, Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was pulmonary consumption lasting a year.

Edward next married Catharine HAY on 18 March 1881 in 6 Burnhall Row, Waterloo, Cambusnethan Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland. (Catharine HAY was born on 6 June 1865 in Whitburn, West Lothan, Scotland.)

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was performed after banns according to the forms of the Established Church of Scotland. The presiding minister was George Burnett of Overtown. The witnesses were William Wilson and Elizabeth Sanders.

Edward Tweedly, a widower, of 8 Burnhall Row was a chainman in a coal pit. His age was noted as 29 years. His father was deceased and his mother still living.

Catherine Hay was an unmarried woman of 16 years. her address was 6 Burnhall Row, Waterloo. She was a domestic servant. Both of her parents were living.

The marriage was registered on 23 March 1881 at Wishaw, the signing registrar being Thomas Steele.
