  General Notes:

John was recorded by the 1861 census for Cambusnethan parish, Lanarkshire. He was aged 10 years and a scholar. He had been born in Cambusnethan.

In 1881 the census recorded John Twigley living with his wife and family in Burnhall Rows, Cambusnethan parish, with his mother Jane and brother Edward's family near neighbours. He was aged 29 years and worked as a coal miner. His birthplace was Cambusnethan. He had six children.

The 1891 census recorded John and his family in 1 & 2 Burnhall Row, Overtown, Cambusnethan. He and his wife Margaret lived with five sons, ranging in age from 11 months to 17 years. John was recorded as a coal miner aged 38 years and born in Cambusnethan.

John was recorded as a coal miner in the marriage certificate of James, his son, in 1900.

In his death certificate of 1923, John was recorded as a coal miner and his age recorded as 69 years. He was survived by his wife Margaret. Both of his parents were deceased then. 2 3 4

The causes of death were certified by H. P. Wright MB ChB.

The informant was John K. Tweedley, son of the deceased, of Gibson's Land, Waterloo, near Wishaw. He notified the registrar at Wishaw, Thomas Steele, on 23 May 1923.


John married Margaret MADILL on 9 June 1871 in Simpson's Street, Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Margaret MADILL was born about 1853 in Glasgow or Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland 4.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was conducted according to the forms of the United Presbyterian Church. The minister was R.S. Bruce. The witnesses were Alexander Jamieson and Jessie Linton.

The groom, John, was an unmarried man of 18 years working as a driver in a coal pit. His usual residence was Waterloo, near Wishaw.

The bride, Marget (sic), was also 18 years and unmarried. She was a brickfield worker residing in Wishaw.

Both bride and groom made their X mark in the register.
