  • Born: About 1795, Ireland
  • Marriage (1): LOUGHRAN, Esther
  • Marriage (2): McKINLAY, Margaret on 7 January 1854 in Glasgow, Scotland 1
  • Died: 27 February 1864 at 3.00 am, 94 Gallowgate, Calton, Glasgow, Scotland 4

Cause of his death was age and general debility.

Other names for Owen were LYNASS, John and LYNASS, Owen.5

  General Notes:

Owen was recorded in the 1851 census, a widower, living with his sister, a lodging house keeper, and his own three children at 72 High Street, Glasgow. He was a power loom weaver and was aged 55 years.

The father of the John Lynass who was born on 4 September 1857 was John. The mother was Margaret McKinlay. The father, John or Owen, was recorded as being a labourer. John's mother, Margaret, informed the registrar.

The 1861 census for Glasgow recorded Owen Lynas living in the household of his brother John at 94 Gallowgate in Calton. He was Irish born like his brother and their sister Bridget, who also lived there. Like John he was a labourer. He was recorded as 66 years old. Four young people, recorded as John's nephews and nieces were part of the household: Bernard, aged 21 years and born in Ireland, a manufacturer's clerk; Mary, 13 years old and born in Ireland, a scholar; Ann Jane aged 5 years and John aged 3 years, both born in Glasgow.

Owen was recorded as 'widower of Margaret McKinlay' when he died in 1864. He was aged 70 years and had worked as a labourer. His father's name was given there as Matthew but no mother's name was given.

In 1866 Owen's daughter married James McCrudden. Owen was recorded as a 'handloom weaver deceased'.

In 1867 Owen Lynas was cited as the father of Bernard Lynas in his marriage certificate. He was recorded as a linen weaver. Bernard's mother was Esther Loughran.

His daughter Mary applied for parish relief in December 1867, and in the document he was recorded as a weaver. He and his wife 'Essie' were noted as dead by then.

In 1884 Owen's daughter Ann married Thomas Duffy in the Gorbals Roman Catholic church of St John's. Both he and her mother, Margaret, were deceased by then. Owen was described in Annie's marriage certificate as a 'dining rooms keeper'.

In Owen's son Bernard's death certificate of 1896, Owen's occupation was noted as 'clerk'. The informant in that case was John McCrudden, Owen's grandson and son of Mary Lynas. 2 4 6 7 8 9 10 11

  Research Notes:

Owen's name was rendered 'John' in his son's registration of birth in 1857.

This may have been a simple mistake on the part of the registrar, or the registrar may have treated it as a form of Ian or Iain, a name better known in Glasgow where the registration was made.

Owen is itself probably an anglicisation of the Irish, Eoghan, which like Euan in Scots Gaelic translates the English 'Hugh'.

  Medical Notes:

No medical attendant was present during the time leading up to Owen's death.

Owen's son of his first marriage, Bernard Lynas, who had been present where the death occurred, notified the registrar R. B. Hamilton on 29 February 1864 of his father's death.

Owen married Esther LOUGHRAN. (Esther LOUGHRAN was born about 1810 and died before 30 March 1851.)

Owen next married Margaret McKINLAY on 7 January 1854 in Glasgow, Scotland.1 (Margaret McKINLAY was born about 1820 and died before 27 February 1867.)

  Marriage Notes:

This was a second marriage.
