  General Notes:

The 1851 census for Old Monkland recorded Robert McNairn, his wife Susan, and their six children living in the parish. Robert's age was noted as 29 years.

In the 1855 birth certificate of his daughter Susan, Robert McNearn was described as a 'blast furnace man' by occupation. He was born in County Donegal, Ireland. His age was unclear. He and his wife had married in Airdrie in 1844. They had six children, two boys and two girls living, and two girls deceased, as well as one boy before marriage and one girl before marriage. The informant of the new baby's birth was her father Robert, who made his X mark. He gave notice before the registrar at Calderbank, Andrew Baird ( and William Rae, slater, who witnessed his mark), on 7 May 1855.

A son, Michael, was born to Robert and Susan McNearn (sic) in 1857. In his birth certificate his father, Robert, was recorded as working as a blast furnace keeper.

Another son, also named Michael, was born in 1859. His father, Robert McNairn (sic), was recorded in the birth certificate as working as a mineral labourer.

'Robert McNairn' died in 1869. In his death certificate he was recorded as being married to Susan Murphy, aged 48 years, and as a slag filler by occupation.

'William McInairney', as he was called in the marriage certificate of his daughter Susan in 1873, was a furnace labourer by occupation. He was deceased by then.

In the following year, 1874, Robert's daughter, Margaret, married George McGill. Their marriage certificate recorded Robert as 'furnace keeper deceased'. 1

  Medical Notes:

R. Wilson, surgeon, certified the causes of death.

William McNairn, Robert's son who had been present where his father's death occurred notified the registrar, Andrew Baird, at Coatdyke on 12 January 1869.

Robert married Susan MURPHY on 4 August 1844 in Old Monkland Or Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland. (Susan MURPHY was born about 1819 in County Sligo, Ireland 1 and died between 1869 and 1873.)

  Marriage Notes:

The IGI records this marriage of 1844 as having been in Old Monkland. The birth certificate [RDS 652/3 No 139 Old Monkland 1855] of their daughter Susan recorded the place of marriage as Airdrie. Possibly the marriage took place in St Margaret's Airdrie, and the banns were called in Old Monkland.

Robert next had a relationship with Margaret MARTIN. (Margaret MARTIN was born about 1823.)
