"Baptisms 1791
Mary Lawful daughter to Donald McMurchy and Ann McLean at Tynlone Baptized 24th September"

1871 Census:
Mary McMillan was head of a household living at Tayintruan in the parish of Killean and Kilchenzie Argyll, the parish in which she was born. She was recorded as 80 years old and a widow. With her lived three unmarried children: Duncan, a fisherman aged 34 years; Catherine an unemployed domestic servant, aged 36 years; and Annabella, also a domestic servant who was unemployed, aged 32 years. A 5 year old child, Mary Johnston, Mary McMillan's granddaughter, completed the household. All the people listed were born in Killean. The dwelling in which they lived had one windowed room.
Note: the ages recorded for the adult children were noticeably underestimated. Also, we know from other sources that the five year old child was Annabella's daughter, registered as Mary McMillan in 1865.

When Mary McMillan died in 1873 her death certificate recorded her age at death as 83 years. It also recorded her as the widow of James McMillan, agricultural labourer. Her parents were deceased.

  Research Notes:

MCMURCHY

This name in its various spellings is said to have evolved from the Gaelic name Muircheartaigh or Muircheartach to an English form of the name. One of the spellings said to derive from this Gaelic name is McKirdy, found in some of the baptism records of this family.

  Medical Notes:

Mary had no medical attendant.

Catherine McMillan, who was Mary's daughter and had been present where she died, gave notice of her mother's death before the registrar at Barr on 26 April 1873 and made her X mark.

Mary married James McMILLAN, son of Donald McMILLAN and Margret McQUILKAN, on 30 January 1811 in Killean and Kilchenzie Parish, Argyll, Scotland.1 2 (James McMILLAN was born on 20 October 1785 in Killean and Kilchenzie Parish, Argyll, Scotland and died probably between 1841 and 1851.)
