LYNASS, John 3 4

  • Born: About 1802
  • Marriage (1): CAUGHIE, Sarah
  • Marriage (2): McKAY, Jane on 9 May 1870 in 88 George Street, Stranraer, Wigtownshire, Scotland 1 2
  • Died: 28 July 1879 at 5.45 am, 91 Roadspark Street, Govan, Glasgow, Scotland 5

Cause of his death was senile decay.

  General Notes:

In the death certificate of his daughter Jane in 1856 John was described as a general merchant. He was still alive then.

In 1857 in his daughter Rosannah's marriage lines John was recorded as a clothier. The family home seems to have been where the marriage took place, at 114 Broomielaw Glasgow.

John Lynass was a pawnbroker, according to the marriage certificate in 1866 of his daughter Mary. Mary's address was noted as George Street, Stranraer.

At the time of his second marriage in 1870, John's age was recorded as 64 years. Since the bride was 24 years, he may have sliced off a few years. An age of 64 years would put his birth year as late as 1806. The age given in 1870 does not match the age given at the time of his death.

John died in 1879, almost 12 years after the death of his first wife Sarah Caughie and nine years after his marriage to Jane McKay. He was 76 years and recorded in his death certificate as a licensed hawker.

In 1891 the death certificate of John's son John Lynass recorded his father as a pawnbroker. 4 5 6 7 8

  Medical Notes:

Frederick A. Freer, surgeon, certified the cause of death.

In a very flourishing forward signature, John's grandson, Lionel Lynass, who had been present, affirmed the information he had given about John's death before the registrar at Govan, A. R. Brownlie, on 4 August 1879.

John married Sarah CAUGHIE, daughter of CAUGHAY and Sarah RICH. (Sarah CAUGHIE was born about 1806 and died 8 September 1867 at 4.45 pm in 88 George Street, Stranraer, Wigtownshire, Scotland 9.). The cause of her death was apoplexy over 10 days.

John next married Jane McKAY, daughter of James McKAY and Rosanna HAGIN, on 9 May 1870 in 88 George Street, Stranraer, Wigtownshire, Scotland.1 2 (Jane McKAY was born about 1846.)

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place according to the forms and rites of the Roman Catholic Church.

John was a widower aged 64 years, resident at 88 George St Stranraer where the marriage took place.

Jane was 24 years old and lived at 14 Bridge St Stranraer. She made her X mark.

The priest was Fr John Canning.

The witnessses were unclear and difficult to decipher: they may be Bridget Gullin or Cullin and P. T or J Ravey (?).

The marriage was registered at Stranraer on 12 May 1870, John Ritchie being registrar. 2
