James was a journeyman shoemaker according to the marriage certificate of his daughter Mary Anne in 1871.

The 1881 census for 43 Dale Street Govan recorded James Niven, widower, as head of the household living there. With him lived his son Joseph, his married daughter Mary Ann McGonnogle and Mary's four children aged 15 months to 9 years. James was a shoemaker by occupation and aged 71 years. He had been born in County Derry, Ireland. 2 4


James married Catherine OWENS. (Catherine OWENS was born about 1815 and died between 1877 and 1881 2 5.)
