Mary Ann McGonnogle was recorded living with her widowed father and her brother by the 1881 census for Dale Street Govan. With her were her four children aged from 9 years to 15 months. Mary Ann was married and aged 29 years, according to the census, and had been born 'at sea'.
PARISH RELIEF APPLICATIONS 1) Mary Ann Niven or McGonnigle applied for parish relief at 11.15 am on 13 July 1877. She lived at 43 Dale Street fl 1 up, left. She was aged 23 years, this then crossed out in pencil and replaced with 25. She had been born at sea between Scotland and Ireland, then in pencil added, at the Mull of Kintyre, on board, then indecipherable signature. She was a Roman Catholic and a millworker, and had been deserted. She was now 'partially disabled' by virtue of having a small child. She was living with her father. Settlement Govan Her children were listed as follows: John 5 and 1/12 years born Busby Sarah 4 years born Dale Street Cathie 2 years born Busby James 9 months born Newcastle Her husband, William McGonnigle, tailor, left applicant about 6 weeks before, supposed to be in Middlesbro' England. 2) William McGonigal's wife Mary Niven applied for parish relief at 11.30 am on 28 July 1887. She lived at 12 Tobago Street fl 1 up f. She was visited on 29 July 1887. She had been born at sea near the Mull of Kintyre. her age was recorded as 35 years, and she was a dressmaker. A Roman Catholic, she was married in St Francis's Chapel Glasgow on 19 September 1871. She was 'partially disabled, having been deserted and left with a family. She had no resources or earnings. Her parents, James Niven, shoemaker, and Catherine Owens, were both dead. Her husband, William McGonnigal, born main Street Gorbals, was a tailor aged 38 years. he was the son of Hugh McGonnigal, tailor, and Sarah Coyle, both of whom were dead. Children: Joseph born 6/1/80 at 44 Lime Street William born 24/9/84 at 44 Struthers Street John born 1/7/72 at 10 West Breast Greenock Sarah born 11/4/75 at Busby Mary had no earnings. The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest was Malachy O'Loughlin and the witnesses were John Dolan and Anne McGraw.
William McGonnigal was an unmarried man of 21 years. He lived 45 Hospital Street Glasgow. By occupation he was a journeyman tailor. Both of his parents were deceased.
Mary Anne Niven, who made her X mark, was an unmarried woman aged 20 years. She lived at 110 Rutherglen Road Glasgow. She worked as a 'skin factory locker'.
The marriage was registered on 22 September 1871 at Glasgow, the registrar being D.G.Macallan
