John married Helen COCHRANE on 28 April 1680 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.1 (Helen COCHRANE was born about 1661 and died before July 1690 1.)


  Marriage Notes:

"The Earl married, first, at Paisley, 28 April 1680 (contract dated 22 and 26 March 1680), with a tocher of £30,000 Scots, Helen Cochrane, second daughter of the deceased William, Lord Cochrane,and granddaughter of the first Earl of Dundonald. She died in 1690, before July, leaving issue..... By his first wife only he had issue."

John next married Catharine (secunda) TOLLEMACHE, daughter of Sir Lionel TOLLEMACHE and Elizabeth MURRAY Countess of Dysart, suo jure, after 1690.2 3 (Catharine (secunda) TOLLEMACHE was baptised about 1661 in Great Fakenham, Sufflok, England 3 and died in 1705 1.)


  Marriage Notes:

"Catherine, baptized at Great Fakenham 1661, died before February 1708 ; married, first .... James, Lord Doune .... and secondly, as his second wife, to John, fifteenth Earl of Sutherland, K.T., but had no further issue."

"James, Lord Doune, who died v.p. 1685, having married .... Catharine, daughter of Elizabeth, Countess of Dysart in her own right .... by her first husband, Sir Lionel Tollemache, Bart. She was married, secondly, after 1690, as his second wife, to John, fifteenth Earl of Sutherland, and died about 1705."

Scots Peerage, volume 6, does not include Elizabeth, Countess of Sutherland who married Adam Gordon, in its numbering of the Earl of Sutherland. hence the disparity. When the Countess is included, their numbering has a +1 added.




"He (John Gordon) married, secondly, Catherine Tollemache, fourth daughter of Sir Lionel Tollemache of Helmingham, Suffolk, Baronet, and the Countess of Dysart ... She was widow of James, Lord Doune, who died 1685... She had no issue by the Earl, and died, much lamented by him, in 1705."
