"The first mention of the name of Walter Berclay is in 1481, when he is a witness to a contract of marriage between George of Meldrum son and apparent heir of William of Meldrum of Fyvie and Elizabeth of Innes, daughter of James of Innes of that Ilk and Janet Gordon. Walter signs as 'Walter Berclay son and heir of John Berclay of Tolly.' "

"In 1482, (Sir George Meldrum of Fyvie) had a charter by King James III. under the great seal, in favour of George Meldrum (son and apparent heir of William Meldrum of Five) and Elizabeth Innes his spouse, of the lands of Petkary in the shire of Kincardine, and in 1502 there is a charter of James IV. to the said George of the lands and barony of Fermartyn on the resignation of his father William Meldrum. In a letter of bailyeary of date 1508, Robert Innes is mentioned as brother-in-law of George Meldrum. This deed is signed by George Meldrum 'manu propria,' showing that he was an educated man, at a time when learning was not held in much esteem."

Elizabeth next married Sir John FORBES 4th of Pitsligo, son of Sir Alexander FORBES 3rd of Pitsligo and Isabel WEMYSS, by 1523. (Sir John FORBES 4th of Pitsligo was born about 1487.)
