In 1901 the census for Lancashire, England recorded Robert Newbiging [sic], his wife Christina G. Newbiging and their daughter Normina W. Newbiging, living at no 25 Key West Street Prestwich. Robert, a labourer in an oil works, was recorded as aged 25 years, and his wife as aged 29 years. Both had been born in Scotland. Their child Normina was aged 6 months and had been born in Lancashire. A visitor, Agnes W. Conn, a domestic house maid by occupation, was living in the household too.

Robert survived the death of his wife in 1943. Her death certificate recorded him as an "oil distributor's supervisor".

In the 1973 death certificate of his son Adam, Robert was recorded as a "Petrol Storekeeper". He was deceased by then. 2 5


Robert married Christina Home GORDON, daughter of George Strachan GORDON and Normina WINTON, on 26 December 1899 in 5 Vanburgh Place, Leith, Midlothian, Scotland. (Christina Home GORDON was born 10 May 1880 at 8.00 am in Temple parish, Midlothian, Scotland and died 23 October 1943 at 2.50 am in 197 Onslow Drive, Camlachie, Glasgow, Scotland.). The cause of her death was carcinoma of the lung, carcinoma of the breast over 5 years, and radical mastectomy.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. The celebrant was James Park, minister of St John's parish. The witnesses were Adam Newbigging and Normina Gordon.

The groom was a single man, 23 years of age, who worked as a labourer and lived at 133 Princes Street, Crenshaw, Manchester. His father, Robert Newbigging, a labourer, and his mother, Elizabeth Dickson, were living.

The bride was aged 20 years and worked as a domestic servant. She too was single. She lived at 89 Henderson Street Leith.

The marriage was registered on 28 December 1899 at Leith. 6
