The 1881 census for St Cuthbert's parish Edinburgh recorded William Bell as head of the household living at 15 St Anthony Place in the St Cuthbert's parish of Edinburgh. William was recorded as 37 years of age and had been born in Abercorn in Linlithgowshire (West Lothian). The household comprised William and his wife and their five children, William's father in law, John Lawrie, and three lodgers: 1] James Morrison an 18 year old railway servant born in Rothesay 2] George Aitchison a 40 year old coachman born in Innerwick and 3] John Caird a 50 year old coachman born in Dumfriesshire.

William Bell was a cab proprietor according to the marriage certificte of his son John in 1904. 2 4


William married Agnes LAWRIE, daughter of John LAWRIE Ploughman and Agnes STEEDMAN, on 18 August 1865 in Currie, Midlothian, Scotland.1 (Agnes LAWRIE was born about 1844 in Ratho, Midlothian, Scotland 4 and died 13 April 1902 at 1.20 pm in 362 Morningside Road, Edinburgh, Scotland 2 3.). The cause of her death was pneumonia over 7 days.
