  General Notes:

"He (George, Provost of Elgin) was succeeded by his eldest son William, born in 1634, who sold his paternal lands of Lochtervandich to Alexander Duff of Braco, and purchased the lands of Auchray and Pittulie, in Buchan, in the reign of Charles II. He mortified the leper lands and the hospital croft of Elgin, with a house in Elgin for the use of four decayed burgesses of the burgh, which still exists, and is a very flourishing charity."

from Bruces and Cumyns

"In 1617, George Cumming of Bregach (S end of Glenrinnes) bought the lands of Lochtervandich (W side of Glenrinnes, technically in Aberlour parish). In 1657, George Cumming and his son William were involved in a contract over the lands of Lochtervandich, while in 1659 George Cumming (subsequently Provost of Elgin) bought Lynmore, Soccach & Dellacham (N end of Glenrinnes, Mortlach parish) which passed to Margaret only daughter of Alexr Cumming, Recletich (mid-Glenrinnes). William Cumming sold Lochtervandich and his other Glenrinnes lands to Alex Duff of Keithmore and his son Alex Duff of Braco in 1675. He then bought the lands of Auchry, Monquhitter, in Aberdeenshire."

from Stuart Mitchell on Message Board

"... the Frasers only finally gave up Pitullie in the 1690s. At all events, the lands were feued out to William Cumming of Pittulie & Auchry (1634-1707), who was buried at Monquhitter. He was the eldest son of George Cumming of Lochtervandich, Provost of Elgin and decided to move away from Elgin to Buchan, where in Monquhitter parish he founded Cummingstown."

William married Isobel GORDON, daughter of John GORDON 2nd of Auchindachy and Eupham BETON.1 (Isobel GORDON was born about 1637.)

  Marriage Notes:

"William Cumyn of Auchray was three times married, first, to Isobel Gordon, daughter of John Gordon, Provost of Banff, by whom he had one son, John Cumyn, who succeeded him in Auchray. By his second marriage he had no issue. His third wife was Christian, daughter of Sir Henry Guthrie of King Edward (Kinnedar), by whom he had a son 'George,' to whom he left the estate of Pittulie and the patronage of the Elgin charity."

from Bruces and Cumyns

Note:

1 This quotation has been given in full for reference only. The parish registers do show Christian Guthrie marrying a George Cummine, William's son, in 1730 in Pitsligo. There is also a record of marriage of William to Jean Sandilands who was the mother of George. No third wife has been named.

2 No 'Isobel' has been listed as the daughter of John Gordon Provost of Banff. In any case Isobel was of an age to be the sister rather than the daughter of John.
