CLELAND, James 13th of that Ilk 1User ID: H295. James married Mary SOMERVILLE.1 (Mary SOMERVILLE was born about 1585.) Marriage Notes: "Now we know by the following that it was James, 13th Cleland of Cleland, who married this Mary Somerville (daughter of Sir James Somerville), and not William the 12th. In the 'Memorie of the Somervilles,' in speaking of James, fourth Baron of Cambusnethan, called 'Velvet Eye,' it says : 'for his daughters they were two . . . . the second, named Mary, was marryed upon James Cleilland of that ilk, of ane anciente house and familie as is in Cleddesdale For his other sone-in-law, the Laird of Cleilland, albeit he had been at much paines and expenses to keep up that house, yet at his death it was but in a staggering condition.' This daughter is referred to later on in the same work as 'Lady Cleilland,' thus : 'ten thousand merks debt which he had contracted for paying the tochers of his two daughters, the Lady Somervill and the Lady Cleilland.'
