Daughter married Alexander CLELAND 11th of that Ilk, son of James CLELAND 10th of that Ilk and Daughter HEPBURN.1 (Alexander CLELAND 11th of that Ilk was born about 1530 and died by about 1597 1.)
Marriage Notes:
"Alexander Cleland - 11th Cleland of that ilk. (Chief. 1547-159 ?.) Son of James, 10th Cleland of Cleland; married a daughter of Hamilton of Haggs. Mentioned in 1565. He at least was alive in 1572, since Wm. Cleland, younger, of Cleland (evidently his son) is mentioned at that date by the title 'younger.' Grossart says he died near the beginning of the 17th Century.
'Alexander Cleland of that ilk, eminent for his loyalty on behalf of Queen Mary : he married Margaret (see Note below), a daughter of Hamilton of Haggs by whom he had William his son and successor.' (Nisbet, 1722.)
'Haggs is now Rosehall. He was one of those summoned to appear before Parliament the 12th March 1565, to see and hear the doom of forfaltour ordourly led against them for the crimes committit be them contenit in said summons." (Grossart's 'History of the Parish of Shotts,' 1880)"

'Margaret' may be an error, unless she had two marriages, since Margaret Hamilton, daughter of James Hamilton of Haggs, according to a primary source married William Stark, younger, of Auchinstarry. Of the other daughters of James, Janet, Christian and Marjory are accounted for, leaving the remaining daughters, Mation, Libra and Helen as candidates for marriage to Alexander Cleland. 1
