Research Notes:
OGG FAMILY AND ITS NAME
This very unusual surname is Scottish, and particularly of Aberdeen. It is recorded as a plantation surname in Northern Ireland from the early 17th century.
It derives from the gaelic adjective 'og' meaning 'young' and was originally given as a baptismal or nickname of endearment. The surname spellings of 'Ogg', and less frequently, 'Oag', are found, having passed through 'Og', 'Uig', and 'Oge' on the way.
The sept is part of the Clan MacGregor. The MacGregors fell out of favour with King James V1 of Scotland, son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and were outlawed. It was forbidden to carry the name of MacGregor. Anyway associating with them were also victimised. In 1613, Finla McJames Uig of Abirnethie was heavily fined for 'reset of members of the Clan Gregor'.
'Og(e)' sept nameholders diminished dramatically in the 17th century. The ban on the MacGregors was lifted by Charles I and was reinforced after the 1745.
Isobell married Patrick GORDON in Milltown of Glenbucket, son of John GORDON and Marjory GORDON, on 24 January 1680 in Strathdon parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.1 (Patrick GORDON in Milltown of Glenbucket was born about 1658.)
