PARENT

Burke states that

"Alexander Stuart, barrister, of Stradown, fourth son of the Earl of Athol, was father of Andrew Stuart of Tannachie ..."

The text then lists the immediately following generations:

- Andrew married to Mary Cumin of Alter,
- their son, Andrew married to Catherine Gordon of Letterfourie
- their son, Patrick married to Marjorie Gordon

There are accuracies and inaccuracies in the initial statement:

1
Robert II was the Earl of Atholl before becoming King Robert II, until 1398. He conferred the earldom on his son David, and upon David's death it was granted to the Regent Albany. On the king's death it was conferred on his son Walter Stewart, a son of Robert's second wife.

2
As the Earl of Atholl, King Robert II, before becoming king, had a fourth son, by his first wife, named Alexander, but Alexander was not Earl of Atholl. He was Lord of Badenoch and Earl of Buchan by marriage. Alexander was excommunicated for deserting his wife, and by the woman who was his unmarried partner, Mariota MacKay, he had six illegitimate sons, one of whom was named Andrew.

3
According to the
History of the Stewart Family, this son Andrew had an illegitimate son, later legitimated, called Sir Walter of Strathaven, who, in turn, had a son Andrew who was the first 'of Tanachie'. 1 2 5 6

Andrew married.
