User ID: C870 General Notes: "Patrick (Gray), sixth Lord Gray, was educated at the University of St. Andrews. He subsequently went to France, where he was on terms of friendship with the Duke of Guise, and on his return to Scotland he attached himself to the person of King James VI., and was by that monarch appointed a Gentleman of the Bedchamber 4 October 1584, Master of the Wardrobe 7 October 1584, a Privy Councillor and Commendator of Dunfermline 22 September 1585. The same year he was sent Ambassador to England, and again in 1586 to intercede with Queen Elizabeth on behalf of Queen Mary. Shamefully betraying his trust, he was banished from Scotland in 1587, and resided in Italy for some years. On 15 August 1593 there is a remission to him and sixteen others under the Great Seal for invading the palace of Falkland and the presence of the King. On 25 September 1596 he received a passport to make a tour of Europe. He had a charter of the lands of Litfle and others, in Perthshire on 8 August 1605 ; succeeded his father in 1608, and died in 1612. His letters and papers were published in 1835 by the Bannatyne Club." Patrick married Elizabeth LYON, daughter of John LYON 8th Lord Glamis, Lord High Chancellor of Scotland and Elizabeth ABERNETHY, 18 May 1575 (contract).1 The marriage ended in divorced 21 may 1585. (Elizabeth LYON was born about 1564 and died after 19 February 1607 5.) Marriage Notes: "Elizabeth (Lyon) married (contract 18 May 1575) to Patrick, afterwards sixth Lord Gray, whom she divorced for adultery 21 May 1585 Elizabeth married, secondly (contract 14 February 1586-87), William Ker, otherwise Kirkcaldy of Grange, second son of Sir Thomas Ker of Fernihirst. They had four children." Patrick next married Marie STEWART, daughter of Robert STEWART Commendator of Holyrood, then 1st Earl of Orkney and Jean KENNEDY, 25 November 1585(contract).2 (Marie STEWART was born about 1563.)
