Research Notes:
AUCHINLECK and AFFLECK
These are two forms of what is essentially the same surname. Other spellings include Affleck, Auchinlec, Haghenlek, Aghleke, Achenleck, and Aathelek.
In its early history some of the family was known as Auchinleck or Affleck 'of that Ilk'. The latter is a phrase which in simple terms demonstrates that the family were 'of' the land that the surname indicates, so they were Auchinleck 'of Auchinleck'. Other cadet branches of the family often acquired other designations based on land that they possessed or worked.
Moreover, to complicate matters, Auchinleck of that Ilk appears to refer to two families in different locations: one is linked to the 15th century Auchenleck or Affleck Castle, situated about a mile west of Monikie parish church in Angus, Scotland; the other is linked to Auchinleck, a village in East Ayrshire, Scotland. 5
Hugh married.
