  General Notes:

"There was recorded at Elgin on June 16, 1653, a contract matrimonial 'at Tombreakachie, 7 May 1652, between Robert Stewart of Nevie and Arthur Stewart, his eldest lawfull sone, for Margaret Stewart, the said Robert Stewart, his lawfull dochter, on one part, and William Gordon of Minmore and Alexander Gordon, his eldest lawfull sone, for Harrie Gordon, sone lawfull to the said William Gordon, on the other part [for Harry and Margaret] : before thir witnesses-Thomas Stewart of Drumine, John Grant of Blairfindie, Patrick Gordone, sone lawfull to said William Gordon of Minmore, Thomas Stewart in Tombreakachie, and Robert Stewart, sone lawfull to Robert Stewart of Nevie.' "

from The Gordons and Smiths at Minmore

"It is not known when Blairfindy was first acquired by the Lairds of Freuchie. It is documented, however, that in the year 1606, Blairfindy and other holdings in Stratha'en were transferred by John Grant of Freuchie to George, Marquis of Huntly, in exchange for Gartinmore, Riemore and Tulloch in Abernethy parish, and other lands in Strathspey. Even still, the Grants apparently continued to hold Blairfindy by virtue of a previous arrangement with Huntly."

from The Grants of Blairfindy

Note:

The 'of' in a designation, eg John Grant of Blairfindy, usually indicates ownership of the land specified, whereas 'in' followed by a specific place, eg John Grant in Blairfindy, does not, but rather indicates that the individual is a tenant who lives and oversees the land.

In the baptisms of John Grant's children in the parish registers the text of the narrative uses both at different times. This is more likely to happen when the family or individual has previously owned the land but no longer does, and so in those cases it is employed as a mark of identity rather than land ownership..

The designation 'of' is used here in that sense, although it is recognised that there was some kind of transfer of land from the Grants to the Gordons of Huntly. 3

John married Catherine GORDON, daughter of William GORDON of Rothiemay and Stock of Cairnborrow and Katherine FORBES.1 (Catherine GORDON was born about 1614.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Other holders of Blairfindy during the 17th century, presumably tenants of Huntly, included Thomas Grant and his wife Katherine Forbes in 1617, their son Thomas in 1654, John Grant and his wife Catherine Gordon"
