GRANT, Thomas of Blairfindy 1

  • Born: About 1575
  • Marriage (1): FORBES, Katherine 1

   User ID: G69.

  General Notes:

" In 1605, another William Grant and his son, Thomas, had sasine (a deed or document recording the transfer of property) to the lands of Blairfindy." [....]

"It is not known when Blairfindy was first acquired by the Lairds of Freuchie. It is documented, however, that in the year 1606, Blairfindy and other holdings in Stratha'en were transferred by John Grant of Freuchie to George, Marquis of Huntly, in exchange for Gartinmore, Riemore and Tulloch in Abernethy parish, and other lands in Strathspey. Even still, the Grants apparently continued to hold Blairfindy by virtue of a previous arrangement with Huntly."

from The Grants of Blairfindy

"The grant of the lordship of Abernethy thus made by the Earl of Moray did not comprise all the barony as possessed by the Lairds of Freuchie, but only the upper portion of it. The lower portion, which included the davochs of Gartinmore, Biemore, and Tulloch, was acquired in 1606 by John Grant of Freuchie from George, Marquis of Huntly, by way of excambion for the lands of Blairfindy and others in Strathavon."

from Chiefs of Grant 2 3

Thomas married Katherine FORBES.1 (Katherine FORBES was born about 1580.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Other holders of Blairfindy during the 17th century, presumably tenants of Huntly, included Thomas Grant and his wife Katherine Forbes in 1617, their son Thomas in 1654"
