URQUHART, Helen 1
User ID: N743. Helen married Sir James GORDON elder fiar of Lesmoir, son of Sir James GORDON 4th of Lesmoir, 1st Baronet and Rebecca KEITH.1 (Sir James GORDON elder fiar of Lesmoir was born About 1590(1591) 1 and died on 5 September 1633 in France 1.). The cause of his death was complications after removal of bladder stone. Marriage Notes: "He (James Gordon) married Helen Urquhart, daughter of the Sheriff of Cromarty, according to the Balbithan MS., but daughter of Sir Thomas Urquhart of Cromarty according to the Harperfield descent of the family. The former is probably correct so far as it goes. She probably was the daughter of Henry Urquhart (son of Walter and grandson of Alexander) and sister of Sir Thomas. The sheriffship was hereditary. In Fraser Mackintosh's Antiquarian Notes (p. 192) there is an (undated) mention of a 'discharge by the Laird of Lesmoir - 10,000 merks of tocher with Helen Urquhart'. In 1639 she was the wife of James Cheyne of Arnage. The reservation of her life-rent of an annuity of 1000 merks oft Newton Garie is mentioned in a charter of 1648." Helen next married James CHEYNE of Arnage, son of John CHEYNE of Fortrie, then of Pitfichie, later of Arnage, Provost of Aberdeen and Jane COUTTS, by 1639.1 (James CHEYNE of Arnage was born about 1580.) Marriage Notes: "In 1639 she (Helen Urquhart) was the wife of James Cheyne of Arnage." |
