LESLIE, Elizabeth

  • Marriage (1): GORDON, Alexander younger, 2nd Baronet of Cluny (of the First House), Sir 1 2
  • Marriage (2): CURRIER, George, Colonel Sir 3
  • Died: France 4

Elizabeth married Sir Alexander GORDON younger, 2nd Baronet of Cluny (of the First House), son of Sir Alexander GORDON elder, 1st Baronet of Cluny (of the First House) and Violet URQUHART of Craigfintry.1 2 (Sir Alexander GORDON younger, 2nd Baronet of Cluny (of the First House) was born about 1601 and died by 1668.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Sir Alexander (Gordon of Cluny, elder) returned to Aberdeen in 1643 with his step-daughter Elizabeth Leslie, when he was given four months grace to compound his debts with his creditors, after which he soon disappears from history; he is supposed to have died abroad sometime in 1644. The family too disappeared; according to the Balbithan MS. Sir Alexander's son, also Alexander, married the daughter of the Laird of Newton, and died abroad without issue. MacFarlane records that Elizabeth Leslie of Wardess married, as her first husband, Sir John Gordon of Cluny (see Note below) - this seems a mistake in the Christian name of the baronet...

...it seems clear that the last Gordon of Cluny of the first house was Alexander, born sometime before 1615 and probably dead by 1668, having married his step-sister after his return to Aberdeen from Durham in 1643. What happened to the estate after 1644 is not known; it may have remained with the creditors or have passed through several hands before 1680 by which date it had come into the possession of Robert Gordon, 1st Laird of Cluny (son of Sir Robert Gordon of Gordonstoun) of the second house."

from Cluny Castle

Note:

This is puzzling, because
Family of Leslie, The Gordons of Cluny and the article of the Gordons of Newton in House of Gordon, all also name the husband of Elizabeth Leslie as Sir John Gordon of Cluny.

""His (Sir Thomas Gordon's) eldest Son Sr Alexr. Gordon Barronet of Cluny married the Laird of Craigstons daughter Urquhart who was tutor of Cromarty, with whom he begat one son Sir Alexander Gordon heir of Cluny, who married the Laird of Wardhouse daughter who dyed in France without succession."

from Balbithan MS 1 2 3 4 5

Elizabeth next married Colonel Sir George CURRIER.3 (Colonel Sir George CURRIER was born about 1610.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Elizabeth (Leslie) married first to Sir John Gordon of Cluny. They went to England during the Civil War. The Earl of Huntly went to the castle of Tillyfour, 24th May 1644, and took possession of certain bonds and of the rents in their name. Elizabeth Leslie was married, secondly, to Colonel Sir George Currier."
