Also Auchincreiff, and modern Auchincrieve, is situated in the south western part of Rothiemay parish, Banffshire. ³

James married Katharine GORDON, daughter of Alexander GORDON of Drumin, Bailie of Badenoch and Strathavon and Christan LOGAN.¹ (Katharine GORDON was born about 1484.)

"(Alexander Gordon of Drumoyes Daughter, Sister to Alexr Gordon of Proney) Katharin Gordon who was spouse to Achencrive Maitland, next to the Laird of Ardneidlie Baylie, and thereafter married the said George^Gordon of Cairnborrow"

The Balbithan MS does not name the husband of Katharine Gordon other than by his designation. The designation and date fit James Maitland who was succeeded by his brother Robert when he died without male heirs. Katharine Gordon then went on to marry twice after the death of her first husband. ^{1 2}
