Old Parish Registers
Marnoch parish Banffshire
Baptisms

"1682
August 12.
James Gordon of Ardmeally had a son baptized called James Mr James Gordons [sic] witnesses"

James Gordon of Banchrie was a 'name Father' at the baptism of James, son of Peter Gordon of Ardmealy, in Marnoch in 1728.

James Gordon was a witness in 1741. The baptism took place in the Episcopalian chapel of St Paul's but was also recorded in the register of the Church of Scotland's Saint Nicholas', Aberdeen:
Old Parish Register
St Paul's Chapel Aberdeen
Baptisms
"Gordon
Nov 20 1741 Dr James Gordon of Hilton Physician in Abd and Barbara Cuming his lady had twins baptized by Mr John Gordon minister: the first named Lewis and the other Margaret Witnesses James Gordon of Banchry, Lewis Gordon of Auchmull, and George Turner Advocate & Sheriff Clerk"

'In 1724, Cruickshank (Robert Cruickshank, of Banchorie, provost 1693-4) who was then resident with his widowed mother in Saint Andrews, sold the estate to James Gordon, merchant in Aberdeen, who was then proprietor of Ardmellie, in the parish of Marnoch, Banffshire. Gordon was a keen Episcopalian, and took an active interest in the raising of funds for the erection of a 'meetinghouse in Aberdeen, for that body.' In 1736 he secured an obligation from the Governors of Robert Gordon's Hospital, Aberdeen, agreeing to grant 'spidarrock' of peats: a spidarrock being what would be dug in one day by a spade, to be cast annually out of the moss of Findon and Cookston by the tenants of Banchory, for sale in Aberdeen for the space of 29 years after Candlemas 1737, each 'spidarrock' to pay 48 shillings Scots yearly. He married Mary Buchan, and his eldest daughter, Anne, married in 1757 John Gordon of Craig, by whom she had three sons: John, who died in infancy; James, the successor; and Francis. Another daughter, Mary, married in 1768 Sir Alexander Bannerman of Elsick.
The next change of proprietor brought the estate into the hands of the Thomsons, with whose name it is best known. Gordon sold the property, in 1743, to Alexander Thomson, advocate in Aberdeen, who also acquired, in 1765, part of the fourth lot of the lands of Portlethen, called Balquharn.'

from History of the Parish of Banchory-Devenick

'James Gordon of Banchory, father of his (John Gordon of Craig's) first wife, was 3rd son of James Gordon of Ardmeallie, being descended from the second (living) son of George Gordon of Coclarachie, a descendant of George Gordon of Milton of Noth, a younger son of Patrick Gordon of Fulzemont, a common ancestor.
James Gordon, Ardmeallie'a son, became a merchant in Aberdeen, and probably made money : he acquired by purchase the property of Banchory, in parish of Banchory Devenick. He married twice, 1st Margaret, a daughter of Robert Cuming of Birness, by his second wife Mary Skene, 2nd child of Andrew Skene of Dyce, and sister of Barbara Cuming, who married [in 1731] Dr James Gordon of Straloch or Birness, the grandfather of General Gordon Cuming Skene of Pitlurg and Dyce. (See 'Memorials of the Family of Skene,' New Spalding Club, p. 87) : he married 2ndly Mary, daughter of Major James Buchan of Auchmacoy, date of their marriage contract 1739. (See Dr Temple's 'Thanage of Fermartyn,' p. 535). By his first wife he had two daughters, viz. Ann, who married John Gordon of Craig, and Elizabeth, who married George Moir of Scotstown. (From information supplied to me privately.)
By his 2nd wife, Mary Buchan, he had a daughter, who married in 1768 Sir Alexander Bannerman of Elsick, 6th Bart. (See Burke's Peerage and Baronetage) ; and I understand a son, Thomas, who acquired the estate of Premnay. This Thomas was served heir general to his father, James G. of Banchory, S.H. 9 Nov. ; 23 Nov. 1751. (Services of heirs.)"
