DUNBAR, Rebecca 1

  • Born: About 1710
  • Marriage (1): GORDON, Robert of Haughs
  • Marriage (2): ANDERSON, Alexander of Arradoul, younger

Another name for Rebecca was ANDERSON, Rebecca.

  General Notes:

'All these debts (accumulated by George Gordon 5th of Arradoul) were liquidated by about 1710, and on June 17, 1712, the Marquis (of Huntly) granted a feu contract of the estate to Alexander Anderson of Auchinreath, who got sasine August 1, 1712. Who was really in possession of Arradoul between 1700 and 1712 I do not know.

It may be noted in parenthesis that this transference did not mitigate the Royalist tendencies of the owner of Arradoul, for Anderson's wife was a great Jacobite. She was Rebecca Dunbar, elder daughter of Archibald Dunbar of Thunderton. She married
(1) in 1726 Robert Gordon of Haughs, grandson
of Sir Ludovick Gordon of Gordonstoun
;
and (2) in 1736 Alexander Anderson of Arradoul,
who died in 1739.
The Rev. J. F. S. Gordon in his edition of
Lachlan Shaw's "Moray," says (ii. 16) that
in the spring of 1746, a few weeks before
Culloden, Prince Charlie slept several days
at Thunderton House, "at that time inhabited
by Lady Arradoul, eldest daughter of
Dunbar of Thunderton, who was shrouded
and buried in the sheets which the Prince
slept in, according to her dying orders."'

from Gordons of Cairnfield

"Lady Arradoul - some sources mention as Mrs. Anderson. In 1746 Prince Charles Edward Stuart traveled to Elgin from Inverness, falling ill with a feverish cold he stayed for 11 days at Thunderton House, before returning to await the arrival of the King's army. Mrs Anderson, a passionate Jacobite, kept the sheets that the Prince slept on and was buried in them 25 years later."

from website Clan Anderson, Their Castle, and Information 2

Rebecca married Robert GORDON of Haughs, son of Ludovic GORDON and Janet MACINTOSH. (Robert GORDON of Haughs was born about 1694.)

Rebecca next married Alexander ANDERSON of Arradoul, younger, son of Alexander ANDERSON of Arradoul, elder, Jacobite 1715 and Anne GORDON. (Alexander ANDERSON of Arradoul, younger was baptised on 30 January 1710 in Bellie parish, Moray, Scotland, died in Elgin parish, Moray, Scotland and was buried on 7 April 1739 in Elgin parish, Moray, Scotland 3.)
