User ID: W412. John married Isabel LINDSAY, daughter of Sir James LINDSAY of Crawford and Egidia STEWART, before 13 July 1369.1 (Isabel LINDSAY was born about 1347.) Marriage Notes: "Isabel, married before 13 July 1369, to Sir John de Maxwell, who survived her." John next married Elizabeth ST MICHAEL.2 (Elizabeth ST MICHAEL was born about 1360.) Marriage Notes: "While Sir John was resigning lands in the north, he was acquiring others in the south. About the year 1399, he married, as his second wife, Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of St. Michael of Quhitchestre in Roxburghshire, and with her obtained these lands. A charter was granted on 6th May 1399, by Archibald Earl of Douglas on the resignation of Elizabeth, in her pure widowhood, to whom the lands had formerly belonged, and bears that they were to be held by Sir John and her, arnd the heirs of their bodies ; whom failing, by her heirs whomsoever. Of this marriage there was no issue, and the estate of Quhitchestre did not continue with the Maxwell family, but passed to that of the Scotts of Buccleuch." |
