KING ROBERT

King Robert II of Scots reigned between 1371 and 1390.

GAFFRID

This is an alternative spelling of Galfrid, a name derived from the Old German 'walt-frid' meaning 'powerful protector'. A corrupt version of this name is Geoffrey;Chaucer's Christian name is found written 'Gaufredus' in
mediaeval Latin.

"The family of Panmure is among the most ancient in Angus, for Galfrid de Maule held all the lands of Panmure by charter from Edgar, King of Scotland". This is quoted in the website at http://www.monikie.org.uk/panmure5.htm from a seventeenth century book by the Reverend Robert Edwards, the minister of Murroes, the Description of Angus. Thus the name had historical associations for the Maule family witht whom the Strachans were closely connected. 3
