John married Margaret OTTERBURN, daughter of Sir Adam OTTERBURN of Redhall, Advocate to King James V and Provost of Edinburgh and Unknown, before 20 October 1534.1 2 The marriage ended in divorced 1556. (Margaret OTTERBURN was born about 1515.)

"During his father's lifetime he married Margaret, eldest daughter of Sir Adam Otterburn of Redhall, a statesman of some note in the reign of King James the Fifth, and provost of the city of Edinburgh in the year 1534, when Sir David Wemyss and Sir Adam Otterburn arranged the marriage in order to cement more closely the love and friendship which had existed between their families. John Wemyss and Margaret Otterburn were married-before 20th October of the same year .... By his first marriage Sir John had issue"

John next married Janet TRAIL before 21 February 1557(1558).2 (Janet TRAIL was born about 1535.)


  Marriage Notes:

"Sir John married, secondly, before 21 February 1557-58, Janet, daughter of Alexander Trail of Blebo, and widow of John Ramsay of Ardbekie, who had been killed at Pinkie. On 11 July 1575 her stepson compounded with her for her terce and paid her £1000 Scots in full of all claims. No more is known of her."
