They were in the third and fourth degrees of consanguinity, if the accepted pedigrees are correct, the future Earl being fourth in descent from Joanna of Beaufort by her marriage with King James I., while Margaret Robertson was third in descent from the same lady by her second marriage to the Black Knight of Lorne."
