  General Notes:

"He was a Member of Parliament in 1690, and one of the committee appointed by that Parliament to visit the universities, colleges, and schools, and to purge them of all insufficient, immoral, and disloyal teachers. He was likewise one of the Lords Commissioners for the plantation of Kirks and valuation of Teinds (Acts Parliament 1690), and so zealous was he to have legal ministers planted in his own estates, that he removed John Stewart at Cromdale, Suene Grant at Duthil, and James Grant at Abernethy, and shut up their churches in 1690 or 1691, till ministers properly qualified for discharging the sacred functions were found."
