James married Marjory MENZIES, daughter of Sir Thomas MENZIES of Pitfodels, Provost of Aberdeen and Marion REID heiress of Pitfoddels.1 2 (Marjory MENZIES was born about 1521.)

"His (George Gordon's) Son said James Gordon fourth Laird of Haddoe married Gilbert Menzies Provost of Aberdeens Daughter, with whom he begat five sons, viz, his eldest son George Gordon fifth Laird of Haddo, Robert Gordon of Savoch, David Gordon of Nethernure, John Gordon of Tillyhilt, and James Gordon ; and a Daughter who married Esslemont Cheyn (see Note below)"

Note:

Scots Peerage, volume 1, states that the Elizabeth Gordon who married 'Esslemont Cheyne' was the sister, not the daughter, of the James Gordon, son in law of the Provost of Aberdeen.




"The next account of the family is contained in a MS. pedigree of 1670, now in Gordon Castle, as follows :

'The Genealogie of David Gordon of Nethermuir, 3d sone to James, 4th Laird of Haddo, by Margery Menzies." (page 4)

"I. David Gordon of Nethermuir - part of the estate of Haddo - born about 1540, was the fourth son of James Gordon of Methlic and Haddo, by Marjory, daughter of Sir Thomas Menzies of Pitfodils." (page 5)

"James, III. of Haddo, who died before May 23, 1582, married Marjory Menzies. Paterson says his son David was born about 1540." (page 8)
