In 1871 Thomas, aged 16 years, arrived in New York with his father and six siblings aboard the 'Columbia'.

In 1880 the census for New Haven, Connecticut recorded Thomas and his wife and child living at 3 Daggett Street. By occupation he was a carriage smith. He was 25 years old and had been born in Scotland.

The 1910 US Federal Census recorded Thomas Nesbit as head of a household that lived at 126 Park Street, New Haven, Connecticut, USA. He lived there with his wife and two sons and two daughters. He was recorded as 55 years old and his birthplace as 'Scot English'. His parents' birthplace was recorded in this way too. His year of emigration was noted as 1857, and he was a naturalized US citizen. He was a blacksmith in the carriage industry. 1 2 3
