FARQUHARSON, John 3rd of Inverey, the 'Black Colonel'
(About 1643-About 1705) |
FARQUHARSON, John 3rd of Inverey, the 'Black Colonel' 1
Another name for John was FARQHARSON, Jon. General Notes: John Farquharson was nicknamed 'Black Colonel'. He was a Jacobite. On 7 September 1666 he slew John Gordon of Brackley and others in an incident commemorated in the ballad 'The Baron of Braickley'. 2 John married Margaret GORDON, daughter of Captain Patrick GORDON of Laichie and Jean GORDON of Cluny, on 18 March 1670. (Margaret GORDON was born about 1653.) Marriage Notes: "According to the Brouchdearg MS., John Farquharson of Inverey, the famous Black Colonel, married a daughter of 'Leacachy.' She is called Mary in the 'Braes of Mar.' According to the Boharm Register, a Margaret Gordon married John Farquharson of Inverey, November 18, 1670. The fact that she had her son baptised (May 2, 1672) Patrick is suggestive of Captain Patrick Gordon of 'Leachie' having been her father (or brother?)." John next married Margaret LEITH, daughter of George LEITH of Overhall and Elspet STRAGN. (Margaret LEITH was baptised on 24 May 1662 in Old Machar parish, Aberdeen, Scotland 4.) |
