"Alexander Jaffray, third of Kingswells, was the eldest son of Provost Alexander Jaffray, by his wife, Magdalen Erskine, and was born in Aberdeen in June, 1614. He is the only provost so far as known, who has left us a record of his life, and this he has fully done in an elaborate diary, printed with a memoir by John Barclay in 1833."

"Jaffray, however much he disagreed with his father on many things, was at one with him in supporting the Covenant, and from 1638 onwards he took a most prominent part in the counsels of that party."
