"Sir Gilbert of Dronlaw, a witness to the charter by his brother William to his son William of the lands of Urie after mentioned. He married (papal dispensation 1416) Elizabeth Reid, and left two sons : (1) Alexander of Dronlaw, who married Marjory or Margaret Fraser, heiress of Ardendraught and Dalgaty, and founded the family designed by these titles ; his line came to an end on the death of his great-great-grandson William Hay of Dalgaty in 1548. (2) Gilbert of Carmuck, whose descendants succeeded to the Dalgaty estates."

The fifth laird who died in the 1540s when the line ended was Alexander, not William.
