Walter married Margaret BARCLAY of Brechin, daughter of Sir David BARCLAY 2nd of Brechin and Janet KEITH, before 19 October 1738.1 2 (Margaret BARCLAY of Brechin was born about 1360.)


  Marriage Notes:

"The Earl married, before 19 October 1378, Margaret of Brechin, lady of that barony, which he held in her right, as Lord of Brechin. He obtained also with her the lands in Fife which had belonged to the Barclays. When she died is not known, but as usual in Scotland he retained a liferent right over her lands until his death. As his sons were both dead and his grandson was executed, he, on the day of his death, after his confession to the priest, made a voluntary declaration in favour of Sir Thomas Maule (ancestor of the Earls of Panmure) as the heir of line of his wife. He stated that after his wife's death he resigned the lands of Brechin-Barclay in the King's hands, except those in Fife. He added that his late son, David Stewart, was never put in fee of the lands in Fife. The distinction was that the lands in Fife were Barclay lands and did not belong to the barony of Brechin. The Earl had issue..."

"Sir Edward and Christian Keith are said to have had a daughter Janet married, first, to Sir David Barclay of Brechin, the second, not the first of that name, by whom she had one daughter Margaret, married to Walter Stewart, afterwards Earl of Atholl and Lord of Brechin."
