LESLIE, George of Balquhain, Sir 1

  • Born: About 1319
  • Marriage (1): KEITH, Elizabeth 1
  • Died: 1351 1
  • Buried: Churchyard of Logydurno, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

   User ID: M340.

  General Notes:

George was the fifth son of his father.

"Sir George Leslie got the estate of Balquhain, in the Garioch in Aberdeenshire, from his father, and obtained a royal grant of it for his services to Robert Bruce in his wars against Edward II., and in those against Edward Baliol during the minority of David II., from whom, in 1340, he received charters of the lands and baronies of Balquhain, Syde, and Braco..."

from Historical Records of the Leslie Family

George married Elizabeth KEITH, daughter of Sir Edward DE KEITH of Sinton, Marischal of Scotland and Isabella SINTON heiress of Sinton.1 (Elizabeth KEITH was born about 1329.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Sir George Leslie, first Baron of Balquhain, married Elizabeth Keith, daughter of the Baron of Inverugie, and by her had a son, Hamelin, who succeeded him as second Baron of Balquhain."

from Family of Leslie

Note: The estate ithat included Inverugie seems to have come into the Keith family by the marriage of John, son of Sir Edward de Keith, to a daughter of the Le Chen family.
If Sir George Leslie did died by 1351, his son's mother, Elizabeth, must have been born in the 1330s at latest, that is, she was of the same generation as John Keith 'of Inverugie'. Elizabeth could then have been John's sister, rather than his daughter, but no proof of that is evident.
