William married Janet MACINTOSH, daughter of William MACINTOSH 7th of that Ilk and Unknown.¹ (Janet MACINTOSH was born about 1367.)

  Marriage Notes:

"William de la Hay. Lord of Lochloy, married Janet Macintosh, eldest daughter of William Macintosh, by his 2d marriage late in life to Margaret, daughter of Rurorie (Rorie) Mor M'Leod of Lewis, who was the seventh Chief of the Macintosh Clan.

(In a letter to the writer of this work, Mr. George Bain, Historian of Nairnshire, writes:
'According to the Kinrara Manuscript, William Macintosh, reckoned 7th Chief of the Macintosh Clan, by his 2d marriage late in life with Margaret, daughter of Rurorie Mor M'Leod of Lewes, had one son Malcolm Beg (who became l0th Chief) and five daughters, the eldest of whom, Janet, he gave in marriage to the Lord of Lochloy, surnamcd Hay.'
Mr. Bain continues in his letter:
'Mr. A. L. Macintosh, the historian of the family, informs me that this marriage may be placed early in the 15th century; Janet's brother, Malcolm l0th Chief, was alive in 1457, but must at that time have been very old.'
The above marriage of William Hay of Lochloy is likewise given by Mrs. Cumming-Bruce in her work, 'The Bruces and thhe Cummings.' " (page 55)


"William Hay of Lochloy, by his wife Janet Macintosh, daughter of William Macintosh, seventh chief of the clan Macintosh, had one son: ('The Bruces and Cummings,' p. 618.)

ii. A daughter who married William Graeme, Baron of Kerdale in Inverness-shire; (vide a letter from Thomas Dunbar, Earl of Moray to John de la Hay, releasing him from an engagement to his daughter, in which William Graeme is referred to as 'your brotheer')."(page 57)

Note: The marriage with Janet MacIntosh has the ring of truth, but since William MacIntosh, 7th of that Ilk, her father, is said to have died in 1368, it would seem to be a case of wishful thinking that William Hay of Lochloy was the son of the royal daughter Margaret Stewart, who did not marry John Hay until 1388. John and William, if the dates are to be taken seriously, are more likely to have been brothers. ¹
