General Notes: "SIR ROBERT KER, afterwards first Baron, and first Earl of Roxburghe, succeeded, on the death of his father, in February 1600, to Altonburn, Cessford, and other family estates, and was the last direct heir-male of his line who held them." Robert married Margaret MAITLAND, daughter of William MAITLAND of Lethington, 'Secretary Lethington' and Mary FLEMING one of the 'Four Maries', 27 and 31 October 1587 (contract) married 5 December 1587 in Newbattlle, Midlothian. Scotland.1 2 (Margaret MAITLAND was born about 1570.) Marriage Notes: "Margaret (Maitland), was married to Robert Ker, younger of Cessford,(contract, to which her uncle Sir John was a party, dated 27 and 31 October 1587), and received a charter of Cessford in liferent, confirmed 8 April 1588. Her husband was in 1616 created Earl of Roxburghe." Robert next married Jean DRUMMOND, daughter of Patrick DRUMMOND 3rd Lord Drummond and Elizabeth LINDSAY, on 10 January 1614.1 (Jean DRUMMOND was born about 1577 and died on 7 October 1643 1.) Marriage Notes: "The Earl of Roxburghe married, secondly (contract 10 January 1614), Jean, third daughter of Patrick Drummond, Lord Drummond, by Elizabeth, daughter of David Lindsay, Earl of Crawford, and sister of his son-in-law, the Earl of Perth. Her marriage to Lord Roxburghe took place at Somerset House." Robert next married Isabel DOUGLAS, daughter of William DOUGLAS 7th Earl of Morton and Lord Aberdour, Treasurer of Scotland and Anne KEITH, after 7 October 1643.1 (Isabel DOUGLAS was born about 1620 and died on 16 December 1672 1.) Marriage Notes: "Isabel, married, first, after 1643, as his third wife, to Robert Ker, first Earl of Roxburghe ; he died 18 January 1650 in his eightieth year, and she was married, secondly, to James Graham, second Marquess of Montrose, who was about sixty years younger than her late husband." |
