Since the first of these pages went to press some months ago, I have thought it advisable to sketch in tabular form the Gordon ownership of Cluny previous to its purchase by the existing family (ie the third family of Gordon of Cluny). In working this out, I find that two branches of the Gordon owned Cluny before its purchase by John Gordon, in the eighteenth century, and both of them came to financial grief. The first group of owners was founded by the 3rd Earl of Huntly. The second group who
succeeded them came from the latter's elder brother."
