  Research Notes:

DAUGHTERS

A Genealogical History of the Wisharts of Pittarrow by David Wishart (1914) does not record Margaret Wishart's marriage into the Arbuthnott family.

Of James Wishart of Pitarrow it states:

"He died in June, 1491, leaving a son John (17) and a daughter Marjory (19). The latter married Gilbert Middleton of that ilk (20). In the 'Acta Auditorum' of 1493, there is a decree respecting her dowry."

Whereas, it is generally held now that Marjory Wishart, who married Gilbert Middleton, was the daughter of John Wishart, son of James Wishart who died in 1491, and that Margaret who married Robert Arbuthnott was the daughter of James Wishart, and therefor sister of John Wishart. 4

Marjorie married Gilbert MIDDLETON of that Ilk, Sheriff of Forfar, son of Laurence MIDDLETON of that Ilk and Nicolas STRATON.1 (Gilbert MIDDLETON of that Ilk, Sheriff of Forfar was born about 1462 and died before 28 March 1533(1534) 2.)

  Marriage Notes:

Gilbert Middleton of that Ilk had a decree against the father of Marjorie Wishart on 15 June 1493 for not having paid the full amount of tocher.

"Gilbert Middleton of that Ilk, son and heir of the deceased Laurence, is so referred to on 15 June 1493, when he obtained a decreet against his father-in-law John Wishart of Pittarrow for £20 Scots, part of a dowry payable with his daughter Marjorie, now dead, who had been Gilbert's wife."
