"PROFESSORS OF MATHEMATICS.

1626, May 3. William Johnston.

Youngest son of George Johnston of that Ilk and Caskieben, and younger brother of Arthur Johnston, the Latin poet. M.D. According to W. Smith's Oratio, p. 24, he had been a professor at Sedan ; but he is not mentioned in Charles Peyran's Hist, de l'acad. de Sedan, and has probably been confused with his elder brother. Died June, 1640. His widow a benefactor, Vol. I., p. 246. His scattered poems have not yet been collected. ' He wrote on the Mathematicks.' (Cat. Scot. Writ. MSS. in Univ. Libr.) Portrait by Jamesone in possession of University. (W.Johnston's Geneal. Acct.) Bajan 1605."

William married Youngest Daughter FORBES, daughter of Abraham FORBES of Blackton and Janet DUNCAN.1 (Youngest Daughter FORBES was born about 1605.)


  Marriage Notes:

William Johnston was the sixth and youngest son of George Johnston of that Ilk, by the Honourable Christian Forbes. He, as well as his immediate elder brother, Arthur, studied at Marischal College. William afterwards taught philosophy at the University of Sedan, in Germany, and from thence returning to his native country was, anno 1626, appointed the first Professor of Mathematics in the University of Marischal College, Aberdeen, which chair he occupied until his death. He married the fifth and youngest daughter of Abraham Forbes of Blacktoune, in Aberdeenshire, a cadet of the noble family of Forbes and by this lady had one son and two daughters"
