James P. Hardie was recorded as 16 years of age by the 1881 census for St Giles Edinburgh, where he lived with his parents at 7 Hay Street.

In 1891 Jas. Hardie was recorded living with his family in Newington registration district, in the civil parish of Edinburgh St Cuthbert's. He was the eldest of the six children living with his father at 23 Lutton Place. Jas. Hardie was recorded as 26 years old, born in St Andrews parish, Edinburgh, and by occupation a violin maker.
