In 1891 Charles John Hardie was recorded living with his family in Newington registration district, in the civil parish of Edinburgh St Cuthbert's. He was the second youngest of the six children living with his father at 23 Lutton Place. Charles John Hardie was recorded as 10 years old, born in St Giles parish, Edinburgh, and was a scholar.

The 1901 census for Edinburgh St Leonard's recorded Charles J. Hardie living with his family at 23 Lutton Place, Newington. His age was noted as 20 years and his birthplace as Edinburgh. He was a clerk by occupation.
