Alfred Hardie was recorded as 3 years of age by the 1881 census for St Giles Edinburgh, where he lived with his parents at 7 Hay Street.

In 1891 Alfred Hardie was recorded living with his family in Newington registration district, in the civil parish of Edinburgh St Cuthbert's. He was the fourth of the six children living with his father at 23 Lutton Place. Alfred Hardie was recorded as 14 years old, born in St Giles parish, Edinburgh, and was a scholar.
