The 1871 census for Methlick, Aberdeenshire, found William and Mary Hardy and some of their family living and working at Auchencrieve. With them lived their daughter Eliza, aged 23 years, their son, William, aged 15 years, and their grandson, Charles Mackay, aged 6 years. The presumption is that Charles MacKay was this person, Charles Hardie, whose father was surnamed MacKay.

In the census of 1891 Charles Hardie, a blacksmith, with his wife and daughter, was recorded living at 4 Nelson Lane, Aberdeen: Charles Hardie, 26 years, Maggie Hardie, 20 years, Elspet Hardie 11 months.
