This details of this marriage raises difficulties so should be treated with caution.

The 'Lord of Nithsdale' designation' is associated with Archibald 'the Grim' Douglas and his son Sir William Douglas, both illegitimate sons. It is true that Archibald did become 3rd Earl of Douglas later in life, but his father, Sir James Douglas, Lord of Douglas, 'the Good Sir James', was not an Earl. The name Marjory does fit the fact that 'Good Sir James' was so closely associated with King Robert I who had a daughter of the same name. If Marjory Douglas, like Archibald, was born outside of marriage, that would account for there being no mention of her in the usual sources.

It has been speculated that Sir James Douglas, 2nd Earl of Douglas, who married the daughter of King Robert II, may have been Marjory's father. This suggestion has the merit of the fact that this Sir James Douglas actually was an Earl, but any daughter of his would have been born in the 1370s at the earliest, too late to be a wife of Sir William Cumin.
